‘PGA 1’ number plate comes up for auction

Golf fans, PGA Professionals and collectors of golfing-related ephemeria should keep a close eye on an online auction currently taking place for car number plate ‘PGA 1’.

The rare plate is for sale at Collecting Cars, an online auction platform dedicated to the sale of iconic, collectible and sporting cars, with the sale closing on Sunday, October 3 at 7.50pm. The current highest bid, as of September 28, is £15,000.

The PGA 1 number plate most recently belonged to Bob Daw, who ran the pro shop at Haste Hill Golf Club in Middlesex in the 1970s, before going on to set up his own retail golf store in Uxbridge called Bob Daw’s Aladdin’s Cave of Golf, which traded on the high street for over 25 years and at the time was considered the biggest golf retail shop in Europe.

Edward Lovett, founder of Collecting Cars, said: “This is a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity for the supreme golfing fan. Personalised number plate listings are becoming increasingly popular on the Collecting Cars site, but it’s rare that we see one as special as this. After a weekend that saw the Ryder Cup dominating the global sporting headlines, ‘PGA 1’ is one of the most sought-after number plates in the world.”

For buyers, the premium on auction lots bought on Collecting Cars is levied at 5% +VAT and is capped at £6,000.
