Sergio Garcia secured his 16th European Tour title following a one-shot victory at the 100th edition of the KLM Open in Holland.
With a narrow lead entering the final round, the 39-year-old Spaniard endured a mixed front nine, making four birdies in his first five holes, but dropped shots a two, six and seven saw him trailing playing partner Callum Shinkwin with 11 holes left to play at The International.
However, Shinkwin’s challenge stumbled at the 10th, where he made a double bogey, handing the initiative to Garcia, who made birdies at 11, 15 and 16 en route to a closing 69, and an 18-under-par total which saw him finish one shot ahead of Danish rising star Nicolai Højgaard, who shot a 68 to take sole possession of second place.
Matt Wallace was third at 15 under, while fellow Englishman James Morrison continued his return to form with a final round 70 for fourth, with Shinkwin’s closing 74 leaving him in fifth.
Garcia said:“I played well all week under pressure. It wasn’t easy, there were a couple of tough moments today, but I hung tough, that’s the most important thing.I made a couple of mistakes here and there, but I felt like I played really well.”
