The 2018 US Open (14-17th June, Shinnecock Hills) might be just under two months away, but the recent Masters tournament gave fans and punters their first taste of the Majors this year and left them wanting more.
There is, of course, always something to be said about getting an early bet in for some value: just consider for a moment all those who, on the eve of the tournament, backed Tiger Woods at just 8/1 for the Masters. Despite it making no difference in the end, they could have backed him at three times those odds a few weeks before the tournament started.

Bookmakers don’t believe that Patrick Reed is ready to step into the elite pack of golfers just yet, so they have priced him at 33/1 for the US Open. That’s on a par with the likes of Tommy Fleetwood and Paul Casey. The odds will drop dramatically if Reed continues to show good form between now and the 14th June.

The (rejuvenated?) Tiger Woods
As mentioned above, Woods’ decent form this year caused a panic on the betting markets, with some ready to believe that he could be back to his best. Some bookmakers had him as favourite to win at Augusta. His current odds of 20/1 for the US Open look a lot more reasonable.
The Masters Disaster Man
Oh, Sergio. The 2017 champion Garcia once again made history with an octuple-bogey at Augusta, which dashed any hope he had of retaining his title. He has proved everyone wrong in the past though, so bookmakers are reluctant to price him out completely at 25/1.
The Top Men
There is always a little crossover in the odds between Dustin Johnson, Rory McIlroy and Jordan Spieth at the beginning of a Major, the early odds for the US Open are no different. Johnson leads the way this time with odds of 10/1, whereas McIlroy and Spieth are at the 12/1. You can almost guarantee that at least one of that trio will be in the mix on the Sunday evening.
The Value Bet
Marc Leishman was among the best players at Augusta for around 95% of the four days. Unfortunately, that 5% cost the Australian dearly. He still ended up in 9th place though and, with a little luck, could have been much higher. He is 66/1 for the US Open. That looks like a superb each-way bet for a player who looks to be given credence to the term ‘late-bloomer’.
The Inevitable Runner Up
Rickie Fowler has now finished runner up in each Major but the PGA Championship. He went somewhat under the radar at Augusta, but at times he was magnificent. He is 18/1 to win at Shinnecock Hills. He will surely win a Major sooner rather than later. Won’t he?
Lefty’s Last Chance?
Once again, bookmakers are reluctant to write off Phil Mickelson, because they know he has it in him to pull a big win out of the bag. Has he got one more Major left in him? 33/1 says he can win the only one to have eluded him in his brilliant career.
