Your Guide to The Open Championship at Royal Portrush

As The  Open is the oldest tournament what better place to house the championship than Royal Portrush Golf Club. Home to one of the world’s exquisite links courses, the Dunluce Links will hold the 148thOpen Championship on the 14th – 21stJuly 2019.

Dating back to the 19thCentury Royal Portrush is a member only club which welcomes visitors a few times a year. A crowd of 8,000 gathered to watch the first Open Championship in 1951 where they witnessed Max Faulkner (pictured) take the title. For the first time, this year’s sell out tournament will host 200,000 and if you are lucky enough to have bagged yourself a ticket it will no doubt be a showdown to remember.

Set in the legendary landscape of Northern Ireland, the British Open marks a historic return for one of the most original and international golf championships after nearly seven decades. If you are fortunate enough to be attending the event, we have put together a brief guide to Royal Portrush and what to expect from this year’s memorable, major Open Championship.

Royal Portrush holds one of the world’s greatest golf courses. The famous Dunluce Links is impressively placed behind the East Strand beach with age-old sand dunes overlooked by the Dunluce Castle ruins from where the course takes its name. The breath-taking views behind the beautiful green provide an outstanding location for an 18 hole 7143 yards golf game.

For visitors attending the Open Championship you may wish to stay at the Open and consider booking accommodation at Royal Portrush, alternatively you could check out the North and West Coast Links during your visit. If you are looking to take part in the golf activities visitors can play during April and May 2019 although ‘play off mats’ will be in use. The golf course will then be closed in June and July and reopen on 25thJuly 2019. The clubhouse catering is offered seven days a week from April to September with a lighter lunch menu also available. It is also important to adhere to the dress code when visiting the clubhouse and to be aware of garment lengths and the strict no cap clubhouse policy.
