GANE TAKES ROUTE 66 to EUROPRO GLORY

Kent professional Chris Gane won the PGA EuroPro Tour’s Eagle Orchid Scottish Masters after heavy winds at Montrose Golf Links meant the final round could not be played.

The former PGA Southern Region champion was the overnight leader heading into the final round, after carding consecutive rounds of 66 to lead by two. And, in the end, it was enough to give the 44-year-old his second EuroPro Tour victory on the Scottish coast.

Gane’s ten-under-par total for 36 holes saw him finish two shots ahead of four players – James Ruth, Jack Yule, Joe Brooks and Gary King. Yule fired a best-of-the-week 65 in the final round.

“It was a long wait this morning to see if we were going out or not, but when the news broke that I was the winner it was brilliant,” said Gane, who now lead the order of merit after four events. “I spent most of the morning watching the weather forecast, and trying to not to let my mind run away with idea of not going out before it was confirmed.”

Two solid rounds from Gane, which were typified in his par-birdie-birdie finish, on arguably the toughest finish the EuroPro Tour has to offer this season.

Gane said: “Reflecting on that finish feels good now, they were tough holes into switching winds, which asked a lot of me at the time.”

Gane, whose last win on the EuroPro Tour came at the World Snooker Golf Masters at Army Golf Club in 2016, joins three other players on one win this season. As well as receiving £10,000, Gane also won a Motocaddy S1 electric trolley.

Highlights of the Eagle Orchid Scottish Masters will air on Sky Sports on June 26.
