CALLAWAY UNVEILS NEW XR SPEED DRIVER AND FAIRWAY WOODS
Callaway is billing its all-new XR Speed driver and fairway woods as the ‘fastest, hottest and most forgiving’ XR range it has ever produced.
Performance boundaries have been pushed with the introduction of a new variable face thickness face, with is lighter and more flexible than any previous design, and generates greater ball speeds and distance across a wider area of the face.
The XR Speed driver is also the first XR driver to feature an ultra-light triaxial carbon crown – 45% lighter than the XR 16 titanium crown – that improves the head’s mass properties to promote high launch and lower spin off the tee and increased MOI – the best formula for increased distance, accuracy and forgiveness.
The aerodynamics of the 460cc head have been enhanced with a new version of the speed step crown, which further reduces air resistance and optimises clubhead speed. The driver is fitted with an adjusted hosel, which allows each of the three loft models – 9°, 10.5°, 13.5°HT – to be adjusted one degree down and two degrees up.
Dr Alan Hocknell, senior vice president of research and development at Callaway, said: “We are aware that drivers in the super-premium category aren’t accessible to every golfer, so our challenge with the new XR Speed was to deliver the best ‘non-Jailbreak’ driver possible, to sit in the premium category, that would still outperform competitor drivers, as well as give our Epic and Rogue drivers a run for their money.”
The accompanying XR Speed fairway woods – 3, 4, 5 and 7 – feature a new shallow head profile that will help players of all abilities get the ball airborne more quickly and more efficiently. A new version of the Hyper Speed Face Cup optimises ball speeds across the entire face, while refined crown aerodynamics also enhance clubhead speed.
The XR Speed driver (9°, 10.5°, 13.5°HT) is available with a 45-5-inch Project X HZRDUS shaft as standard in RH/LH and will have an RRP of £339. Ladies options, with a revised cosmetic, are available in 10.5° and 13.5°.
XR Speed fairway woods (3, 4, 5, 7) are available in RH and LH (apart from 4), with Project X HZRDUS shafts. Ladies models are available in all loft options. They have an RRP of £229 and go on sale on May 8.
